Inlays and onlays are restorations designed to restore the function and appearance of teeth that have become moderately damaged. They are often recommended when the damage cannot be repaired with the use of a traditional filling, but a full dental crown is not necessary.
At West SoHo Dentistry, our inlays and onlays are custom-made using an impression of your tooth. Two visits to our office are required to complete the procedure. On your first visit, an impression will be taken so that your custom restoration can be constructed. Once it is complete, you will return to the office to have it installed.
Inlays are used for damage that is only on the interior of the tooth, between the points. This restoration will not extend over the cusps of the tooth. Onlays, on the other hand, are used for damage that covers a larger surface area and they cover at least one of the tooth’s points or cusps. Inlays and onlays are excellent options for restoring the chewing surface of a tooth while retaining more of the original structure than if it were restored with a dental crown.
